Letter to the editor: Dangers of intersection in Lititz need attention

Dear friends in my community,

You don’t know her, but my daughter is a pianist who plays for thousands and oozes music, an all-star pitcher who loves the thrill of being in “the circle,” an honor roll student. More than that, she has a ready smile, big heart, and a presence that wins even the toughest soul over; she’s lovely. She was recently in an accident at the intersection of Route 501 and Lexington Rd. As we stood, shaken, in the aftermath of the accident we were informed by neighbors and local authorities that accidents happen at this site regularly. This was a horrible reality to hear. Further research showed that not only is this true, but has been going on for a grievous amount of time and with horrific degrees of severity. The thought that those tasked with caring for communities, roadways, and those they’ve sworn to represent know about this and yet continue to make the decision to do nothing is a crime against humanity! Accidents are happening like clockwork time and time again at this site and yet nothing happens. How many is enough for those charged with care of these issues? How many people need to be hurt before a change happens? What count are they looking for? Are they waiting for a fatality?

As many who have gone before her, that problematic intersection has forever changed my daughter. This accident has irreversibly broken a piece of her and caused mental health struggles that we didn’t even know were possible in a girl previously so confident, strong, and outgoing. The physical pain in the aftermath of an accident like this is incredibly hard to watch. It raises so many unknowns about a future previously filled with light.

This time it was my turn. I got the call. I still get calls; now it’s my daughter on the other line with yet another panic attack. Her piano has gone silent. Her smile is gone. The hand on the bat and glove now shake. Next will be someone else’s turn, maybe yours. When will the damage be enough?  Can we not all raise our voices together and say enough is now?! Please contact your local representatives and tell them we need change. Let’s stop this damage to our community.

For us all,

Adrienne Brubaker, Lititz
