Lancaster County Prison inmate dies at 61

Lancaster, PA – At approximately 6:30 AM on Friday, January 30, 2026, an inmate at Lancaster County Prison (LCP) was found unresponsive in his cell by correctional staff. Prison medical staff immediately responded and after examination called 911. The inmate became responsive by the time EMS personnel arrived and was then transported to Lancaster General Health Penn Medicine (LGH). Following the inmate’s departure from LCP, the Deputy Warden contacted the inmate’s family to notify them.

The inmate was released from custody of the Lancaster County Prison by the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas while at the hospital. Inmates who are receiving end of life care are sometimes released from custody, when appropriate, to remove restrictions of family members having access to the individual.

The Lancaster County Prison remained in communication with LGH following the inmate’s arrival and were later informed on February 2, 2026 that he had passed away on February 1, 2026.

The inmate’s name was Erik Guenther. He was 61 years old.

The inmate was admitted to Lancaster County Prison on January 15, 2026 for Failure to Appear stemming from charges of Receiving Stolen Property, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Driving While Operating Privileges are Suspended or Revoked. He also had a detainer from Montgomery County Court for Failure to Appear.

The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office will provide a report on manner and cause of death once available.
