Lancaster County Parks & Recreation announces completion of Rail Trail Resurfacing Project under county’s Capital Improvement Program

Lancaster, PA – On Wednesday, November 12th, Lancaster County Parks & Recreation completed a project to resurface the County’s Conewago and Junction Rail Trails.

Resurfacing included new stone to ensure the trails are smooth for users and improved drainage. These measures also made sure the trails are more easily maintained in years to come. Crews began working on October 6th and in just over a month, were able to complete the resurfacing and reopen both trails for users.

Annually, Lancaster County receives hundreds of thousands of users on its trails. The Conewago Trail alone receives 65,000 users annually. The County is currently in the process of updating its Master Parks & Trails Plan for the first time since 1992. Earlier this year, Lancaster County Planning and Parks & Recreation conducted a public survey seeking input on the County’s Parks & Trails system. The data from the survey will be used to make updates to the County’s parks and trails systems and plan projects for the future.

The project was funded as part of the County’s Capital improvement plan. The County maintains a Capital Improvement Reserve Fund, which is separate from the County’s General Fund otherwise known as an “operating fund,” to help implement projects identified in the CIP.
